When Love Fills a Moment

One of my dearest friends almost died recently.  After a month-long recovery, when I knew for the first time that she was going to be okay, I wrote this poem for her. I’m so incredibly thankful she’s back to being herself.

When Love Fills a Moment

On a gentle summer day
under a canopy of
leaves and grapes
we ate and drank
to the mystery of it all
The sunlight
undeterred by the canopy
Mottled your beautiful brown skin
until it was sure
it had gotten back in
You had this aura
around you that day
that somehow restored
with absolute certainty
something you’d lost long ago
It reminded me
that there’s nothing
more precious than
when love fills a moment
